Japanís Megumi Abe was the player to spring the biggest surprise as matters progressed in the second round of the Womenís Singles event at the GAC Group 2013 ITTF World Tour United States Open in Las Vegas on Friday 5th July.
A qualifier, she accounted for the host nationís Ariel Hsing in five games, the no.5 seed (12-10, 13-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-8), to reach the quarter-final stage of a Womenís Singles event on the ITTF World Tour for the first time in her career.
Previously her best was last September when she reached the third round of the Womenís Singles event at the GAC Group 2012 Koltsovo ITTF World Tour Russian Open in Ekaterinburg.
The win recorded by Megumi Abe was the only upset in the second round of the Womenís Singles competition.
One surprise in the second round of the Womenís Singles event; in the third round of the Menís Singles competition, there were two upsets.
The players to cause the problems were Chinaís Tao Wenzhang and Yang Ce, both qualifiers; both beat Japanese adversaries.
Tao Wenzhang accounted for Kentaro Miuchi, the no.10 seed in five games (5-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-5, 11-4); Yang Ce ended the hopes of Tatsuya Ono, the no.16 seed (11-4, 8-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-6).
Otherwise, matters went very much as per prediction.
In the Menís Singles event, Swedenís Jens Lundqvist, the no.1 seed, beat Canadaís Pierre-Luc Theriault (11-9, 7-11, 15-13, 12-10, 11-7); Croatiaís Zoran Primorac, the no.2 seed, overcame Japanís Takanori Shimoyama (7-11, 11-9, 11-7, 9-11, 11-4, 14-12), whilst Canadaís Eugene Wang, the no.3 seed, ended the hopes of the host nationís Wang Qingliang (11-4, 11-2, 11-7, 9-11, 12-10).
Success for the top three seeds, also there was success for Mexicoís Marcos Madrid, the no.6 seed and Japanís Masato Shiono, the no.8 seed; Marcos Madrid overcame Welshman, Ryan Jenkins, the no.11 seed (12-10, 11-9, 11-3, 11-8), Masato Shiono defeated Yuan Xiaojie of the United States (11-9, 11-5, 11-7, 11-7).
In the one remaining third round contest, the battle of the qualifiers saw Japanís Tatsuo Seyama overcome Chinaís Li Tianyu (9-11, 8-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-9).
Favourites in Form
Meanwhile, in the Womenís Singles event second round matches, the favourites were in form.
Romaniaís Elizabeta Samara, the no.1 seed, overcame Japanís Airi Morinaga (9-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-6), Tang Liying from the United States, the no.7 seed, ousted Japanís Miki Tuschida (11-8, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7); whilst Canadaís Zhang Mo, the no.8 seed, ended the hopes of Mika Tuschida (7-11, 11-1, 13-11, 7-11, 11-4, 11-6) and Germanyís Petrissa Solja, the no.3 seed, defeated Mexicoís Yadira Silva.
Lower Half of Draw
Not to be outdone, in the opposite half of the draw, the host nationís Lily Zhang beat compatriot Wu Yue (11-7, 5-11, 11-7, 4-11, 15-13, 11-5); Serbiaís Ana-Maria Erdelji, the no.6 seed, defeated Hungaryís Rita Kertai (11-3, 11-5, 11-3, 15-13), whilst Hungaryís Georgina Pota, the no.2 seed, halted the aspirations of Japanís Shikego Nakamura (11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 11-5, 6-11, 12-10).
At the quarter-final stage of the Menís Singles event, in the top half of the draw Jens Lundqvist meets Marcos Madrid, Tao Wenzhang confronts Eugene Wang; in the lower half of affairs, Yang Ce plays Tatsuo Seyama, Masato Shiono opposes Zoran Primorac.
In the same stage of the Womenís Singles event, Elizabeta Samara faces Tan Liying, Zhang Mo opposes Petrissa Solja, in the opposite half Lily Zhang faces Megumi Abe, Ana-Marija Erdelji meets Georgina Pota.
