Highest ranking player on duty in Philadelphia, Feng Tianwei, started the Seamaster 2016 Women’s World Cup on a commanding note on Friday 7th October.

She posted a four-nil victory (11-9, 11-8, 11-6, 11-5) in the opening round of the main draw despite the reported treatment recently received.

For the first time, no player from the Chinese Team is on duty following the withdrawal of Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen; this placed the Singaporean main player Feng Tianwei at the top spot of the seeding. This competition indeed gives her more advantage to finally win the title. However, when asked about her expectations on the competition, she didn’t sound very thrilled.

She stated that she just wants to reach the semi-final. According to reports, Feng Tianwei received a treatment after the Rio Olympic Games. Unfortunately, the treatment required several weeks of recovery which affected her time for training and her playing condition.

Yesterday, despite the lack of training, Feng Tianwei posted a commanding start in the competition.

Feng Tianwei will advance into the next round. She will be facing Sabine Winter of Germany in the quarter-final. If she wins it, then she has already reached her goal.

However, it might not be too easy for the Singaporean player as Sabine Winter proved to be a strong opponent in the competition. In the previous round, she surprised Yang Haeun of Korea Republic, forcing her opponent into a full-distance match to achieve victory.

Feng Tianwei’s match against Sabine Winter will take place later today, 8th October, 20:40 local time.
