Furthermore, in the Under 11 Mixed Doubles event, Puerto Rico is assured of both gold and silver; Oscar Birriel and Brianna Burgos face Derek Valentin and Daymar Castro in the final.
At the semi-final stage Oscar Birriel and Brianna Burgos beat Mexico’s Rogelio Castro and Hannah Martin (9-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-4); Derek Valentin and Daymar Castro overcame Peru’s Rodrigo Vigo and Ana Yenobi (11-5, 11-7, 9-11, 11-4).
Likewise, hopes of Puerto Rican players standing on the top step of the medal podium are very much alive in the Under 11 Girls’ Doubles and Under 13 Boys’ Doubles event.
In both events they face Peruvian opponents. In the former Brianna Burgos and Daymar Castro oppose Isabel Solar and Ana Tenobi; in the latter, Angel Naranjo and Jabdiel Torres confront Carlos Fernandez and Angel Jimenez.
At the semi-final stage Brianna Burgos and Daymar Castro overcame Brazil’s Laira Silva and Giulia Takahashi (7-11, 4-11, 4-11, 11-7, 11-2); Isabel Solar and Ana Yenobi defeated colleagues Andrea Becerra and Alheli Llufire (11-3, 9-11, 11-4, 11-7).
Somewhat similarly, in the Angel Naranjo and Jabdiel Torres overcame Ecuador’s Mathias Lecaro and Nevcer Robalino (11-4, 7-11, 11-9, 11-6); Carlos Fernandez and Angel Jimenez accounted for compatriots Joel Cisneros and Cesar Silva (11-4, 9-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-5).
A place in the final in both the Under 11 Girls’ Doubles and Under 13 Boys’ Doubles events for Peru; it is the same in the Under 13 Girls’ Doubles and Under 13 Mixed Doubles competitions.
In the Under 13 Girls’ Doubles event, an all Peruvian semi-final witnessed success for Francesco Escobedo and Alejandra Medina against Rosalyn Leon and Alejandro Prieto (8-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-8). In the Under 13 Mixed Doubles competition, Jose Zapata and Rosalyn Leon booked their place in the title deciding contest courtesy of success in opposition to teammates Angel Jimenez and Francesco Escobedo (12-10, 11-5, 9-11, 11-6).
Awaiting Francesco Escobedo and Alejandra Medina in the final is the Chilean pairing of Macarena Montecino and Mariam Ruiz; for Jose Zapata and Rosalyn Leon, Mexico’s Juan Gomez and Marbella Aceves are the adversaries. At the semi-final stage Macarena Montecino and Mariam Ruiz beat Peru’s Maria Maldonado and Ana Aragon (11-6, 11-7, 11-5); Juan Gomez and Marbella Aceves ended the hopes of Brazil’s Kenzo Carmo and Giulia Takahashi (11-3, 11-6, 11-8).
Possibilities for Mexico, it is the same in the Under 11 Boys’ Doubles final; the one event that does not involve Peru or Puerto Rico.
However, it very nearly did involve Puerto Rico; at the semi-final stage Oscar Birriel and Derek Valentin experienced defeat by the very narrowest of margins. They were beaten by Colombia’s Miguel Aguirre and José Acevedo (10-12, 11-6, 8-11, 11-5, 12-10).
In the final the Colombians meet Mexico’s Jorge Buenestro and Rogelio Castro; at the semi-final stage they accounted for Peru’s Marcelo Chavezand Marko Kuwae (11-6, 9-11, 11-5, 13-11).
Play concludes on Sunday 30th October.
