One upset and as matters progressed in the lower half of the draw in the opening round of the Girls’ Singles competition, there were more surprises.
China’s Sun Yizhen, a player with no current World ranking, beat Oceane Guisnel, the no.29 seed (11-4, 5-11, 11-9, 16-1, 11-2); whilst in a similar vein, Germany’s Jennie Wolf and Amy Wang of the United States both upset the order of merit.
Jennie Wolf, listed at no.53 in the pecking order, accounted for Korea’s Kang Dayeon, the no.21 seed (11-6, 11-13, 11-5, 8-11, 13-11, 11-7); Amy Wang, the no.34 seed, ended the aspirations of England’s Tin-Tin Ho, the no.19 seed, in a similar manner (11-6, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-7).
Meanwhile, as matters progressed in the lower half of the draw, with the exception of Zhang Xuan, the players who had received direct entries to the main draw emerged successful.
Japan’s Mima Ito, the no.2 seed, overcame Belgium’s Eline Loyen, the no.24 seed (11-8, 11-8, 10-12, 11-6, 11-4); colleague, Hina Hayata, the no.3 seed, accounted for Turkey’s Simay Kulakceken, the 50th highest rated player on duty (11-5, 12-10, 11-5, 11-7).
Noteworthy performances, it was the same from Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz, the no.6 seed, as it was from Romania’s Adina Diaconu, the no.7 seed and Audrey Zarif of France, the no.9 seed.
Adriana Diaz beat Leili Mostafavi, the no.41 seed and like Audrey Zarif from France (11-9, 11-3, 8-11, 10-12, 11-8, 11-9); Adina Diaconu overcame the Czech Republic’s Marketa Sevcikova, the no.48 seed (12-10, 11-7, 11-5, 8-11, 11-2), whilst Audrey Zarif halted the progress of Grace Yang from the United States, the no.61 name in the order of merit (11-5, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-5).
Success for notable names, there were wins for two more. Maria Malanina added to Russian success by beating Egypt’s Amira Yousry (11-5, 14-12, 11-5, 9-11, 11-8); Hong Kong’s Mak Tze Wing, the no.13 seed, defeated Chinese Taipei’s Chen Ying-Chen (11-7, 11-7, 17-15, 8-11, 11-1).
