Watch it again:
Moments before the finals, the duo along with their coach for final- Sharath Kamal Achanta, had the following discussion in the changing room:
Groth and Franziska: Kamal if we win, we should do the dab.
Kamal: Dab, what is dab?
Groth and Franziska: You don’t know the dab? Let me show you how its done.
Both Groth and Franziska, stood up and taught Kamal how to do it until they perfected it. Unfortunately, Kamal was not caught on camera, but we caught him later to show us his own one. Check it out:
The duo has now decided that Kamal will be their coach each time they reach the finals of any tournament. “They have won the doubles twice now, and both the times, I was the coach. They consider me as their lucky one, so they have agreed with their coaches, that I should be the exclusive finals coach,” Kamal giggled.
The seeds of friendship were sown long time back. “Franziska and I have played two seasons together for Borussia Düsseldorf in the German League. We train and play matches together. Now, we are like brothers,” said Kamal. “Groth has also been around in Düsseldorf. His coach Linus Mernsten is my personal coach and thus we have all spent a lot of time together,” he revealed.
The dab dance is an import from the United States, having originated from the hip hop music scene. It became popular in American professional sports when NFL star Cam Newton performed in 2015 after a touchdown. Since then, it has become popular amongst sportspersons all over the world to celebrate a win by performing the dab. Players like Paul Pogba, LeBron James, Victoria Azarenka have made news over it.
Who is your dab buddy?
