Success contrary to status for Philipp Floritz; it was the same for India’s Amalraj Anthony, the no.8 seed; most impressively, he overcame Romania’s Hunor Szocs, the no.4 seed, in four straight games (11-6, 13-11, 11-8, 11-7).

A surprise according to seeding, in reality it was no surprise whatsoever. It was the fourth time that Amalraj Anthony and Hunor Szocs had met in a World ranking event; it was the fourth time that Amalraj Anthony had won.

In 2012, Amalraj Anthony had emerged successful at the Liebherr World Team Championships and on the ITTF World Tour in Germany. Meanwhile, more pertinently he had prevailed the previous week at the semi-final stage of the Men’s Singles event at the Seamaster 2017 ITTF Challenge Chile Open. In São Paulo it was same again.

Two unexpected outcomes in the round of the last eight of the Men’s Singles event; in the two further contests it was success as predicted.

Brazil’s Hugo Calderano, the top seed, beat Frenchman, Andrea Landrieu, the no.7 seed (6-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-9); Gustavo Tsuboi, the no.5 seed and like Hugo Calderano from Brazil, overcame compatriot and qualifier Eric Jouti (11-5, 11-5, 11-9, 11-9).

At the quarter-final stage, Hugo Calderano meets Gustavo Tsuboi, Amalraj Anthony confronts Philipp Floritz; the matches will be played later today.
