Zhang Jike was forced to withdraw from his Men’s Singles first round match against Japan’s Masaki Yoshida due to hip injury. The exact moment at which he felt the pain is unknown, but Zhang Jike seemed to be lethargic since the beginning of the match. Down 7-10 in the first game, Zhang did not play any further, shook hands with the umpires and his opponent and withdrew from the match.
Disappointed fans broke down into tears as they saw him departing in pain.
Zhang Jike refused to give any interviews and immediately left the arena.
It has been widely reported that Zhang Jike was born with a hairline fracture on his pelvic bone. His intense training for table tennis also resulted in his waist injury. He played the Rio 2016 Olympic Games while injured.
In the recent past injuries have been nagging him, he withdrew from the Marvellous 12 in March this year and the World Tour Grand Finals in December 2016.
