Impressive at the 2016 ITTF African Championships staged last October in the Moroccan city of Agadir, when he reached the quarter-final stage of the Men’s Singles event before losing to Egypt’s El-Sayed Lashin, Tunisia’s Thameur Mamia is seeking to repeat that form at the forthcoming 2017 ITTF African Cup.

A three day tournament, play starts on Saturday 1st July.

Notably the tournament will be played at very same venue in Agadir as the 2016 ITTF African Championships; it will be familiar surroundings.

Thameur Mamia spoke to Olalekan Okusan, the ITTF-Africa Press Officer

After having made a meaningful impression at the 2016 African Championships by reaching the quarter-finals, I still want to progress and reach a semi-final.  I think I’m well prepared for this competition and I hope to win a medal if possible.

Recently, I participated in a training camp in Bordeaux with my club. I am now practising in Tunis under the watchful eyes of our national head coach Mr. Ghazi Belkahia; therefore, I think that I am a strong challenger a medal in Agadir.

The Tunisian National Team has a really good young generation of both men and women. Now, I think that we can compete very seriously in team events but not yet in singles for gold medals.

I hope we can start aiming for the top prize in the Africa in the next two to three years.
