Chen Xington (CHN) knocked out Yu Mengyu (SGP), the no.14 seed in emphatic fashion this evening in the Women’s Singles at the Seamaster 2017 Australian Open.

It was a one sided encounter, with Chen winning in straight games 11-6, 11-4, 11-4, 11-7.

Meanwhile compatriot Gu Yuting (CHN) struggled through a six game encounter against the defensive skills of Honoka Hashimoto (JPN).

The crowd were often in awe as Hashimoto retrieved the ball from the near the floor, then followed it up with backhand punches worthy of Jorgen Persson. But it wasn’t enough and attack triumphed over defence as Gu won 11-8, 11-9, 10-12, 10-12, 11-8, 12-10.

But it wasn’t only the crowd that was animated about the match. Chinese National Coach Chen Bin, who was benching for Gu was more than just a little active on the bench. Chen was making the most of the new coach rule. Somewhat reminiscent of a football manager, he was definitely enjoying the change.

“If we can speak and communicate with the players we can engage them and keep them more active. But also before I had to sit still and be very serious, not moving at all. Now it is fun for me and I can show more personality as a coach, because I enjoy being vocal and communicating with the player.” Chen Bin
