Success came the way of the host nation as Jamaica enjoyed success on Wednesday 23rd August at the 2017 Caribbean Under 13 and Under 11 Championships staged in the city of Kingston.

Dana Prendegast and Shamoy Lamont won the Under 11 Girls’ Doubles title; Solesha Young and Kelsey Davidson donned the counterpart Under 13 Girls’ Doubles crown.

At the final hurdle Solesha Young and Kelsey Davidson accounted for colleagues Jannel Blake and Danielle Irving (11-6, 11-7, 11-6), having at the semi-final stage defeated Trinidad and Tobago’s Priyanka Khellawan and Brianna Solomon (6-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-3).

In the counterpart penultimate round duel, Jannel Blake and Danielle Irving had ended the hopes of colleagues Jevera Prendergast and Christina Smith (12-10, 11-3, 12-14, 11-9).

Jamaica to the fore; it was the same in the Under 11 Girls’ Doubles event where the hosts provided three of the four semi-finalists.

The one interloper was the Dominican Republic duo of Adrianna Estrella and Shary Muñoz; they accounted for Olivia Peterkin and Jada Allwwod (11-7, 10-12, 6-11, 11-9, 12-10), prior to experiencing defeat in the final when opposing Dana Prendegast and Shamoy Lamont (9-11, 12-10, 2-11, 11-4, 11-6). Earlier, in the corresponding semi-final, Dana Prendegast and Shamoy Lamont had ousted Liana Campbell and Tsenaye Lewis (5-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-9, 11-6).

Success for Jamaica, there was also success for the Dominican Republic and for Trinidad and Tobago.

Nicholas O’Young and Priyanka Khellawan flew the flag for Trinidad and Tobago; they won the Under 13 Mixed Doubles event overcoming the Dominican Republic’s Marcos Tavarez and Dileisy Acevedo in the final (11-8, 9-11, 14-12, 8-11, 11-6). One round earlier Nicholas O’Young and Priyanka Khellawan had beaten Jamaica’s Joel Butler and Solesha Young (6-11, 11-7, 5-11, 11-8, 11-3); similarly, Marcos Tavarez and Dileisy Acevedo had accounted for Jalen Kerr and Rebekah Sterling, also from Trinidad and Tobago (11-7, 9-11, 12-10, 12-10).

The silver medal for the Dominican Republic; in the Under 11 Mixed Doubles event it was gold and silver. Ramon Vila and Shary Muñoz accounted for compatriots Eduardo Darley and Arianna Estrella (11-9, 18-16, 11-8) in the title deciding contesy. At the semi-final stage Ramon Vila and Shary Muñoz had beaten Trinidad and Tobago’s Sachin Ramsumair and Brianna Solomon (11-4, 11-5, 11-2); Eduardo Darley and Arianna Estrella had accounted for Jamaica’s Azizi Johnson and Tsenaye Lewis (11-8, 11-4, 7-11, 11-6).

Notably present at the 2017 Caribbean Under 13 and Under 11 Championships is the Dominican Republic’s Juan Vila, the President of the Latin American Table Tennis Union and St Lucia’s Teddy Matthews, the President of the Caribbean Region Table Tennis Federation.
