Gillian Edwards is set to make her fourth appearance at the continental tournament and in an interview with the Perthshire Advertiser she stated her delight in receiving another international call-up to compete for Scotland.
“It is always an honour to be selected to represent Scotland and it’s crazy to think that is has been 20 years since my first cap. I have played in the European Championships in 2000 in Germany, 2002 in Croatia and 2013 in Austria. Over the years, through these competitions and other World Championships and Commonwealth Games, it has become much easier to play at that level without the nerves of the competition getting in the way”, Gillian Edwards.
Scotland will feature in the sole Women’s Standard Division group at the upcoming European Championships alongside Norway, Estonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Latvia and Macedonia.
The British country will be hoping for a positive outing from its women’s squad in Luxembourg, and while Edwards has spent some time away from the table in recent months she is optimistic that she can get fully up to speed soon and compete right at the very top of her game at the tournament.
“I have had a break in the summer and have worked on my fitness which I think has helped my game. Since I have started training again, I am feeling confident about how I am playing so hopefully I can play well in the competition. This will be my first competition of the season so it will be really difficult to get to European level but I will try my best to compete”, Gillian Edwards.
Edwards is well acquainted to representing Scotland on the international stage having been selected to compete for the country at World Championship, Commonwealth and Olympic levels and is happy to have experienced a lengthy spell at the top of Scottish table tennis.
“Looking back over my career I am very proud of what I have achieved and the many times and competitions that I have competed for my country. There have been many ups and downs throughout the 20 years but to have stayed in the top three seniors for around 15 years – I think that is a great achievement”, Gillian Edwards.
