The success gained by Yadira Silva was no great surprise, a former winner of the Women’s Singles title at the Latin American Championships and present at the three most recent Olympic Games, she is most certainly worthy of a seeded position in Cartagena de Indias. However, recent absence from the international scene means that her world ranking has lapsed.
Victory one day earlier against Guatemala’s Andrea Estrada (11-7, 10-12, 12-10, 11-7), she beat Cuba’s Shelly Machado Fernandez (11-3, 11-8, 11-7) to secure first place in her group.
Likewise, Lizdainet Rodriguez having accounted for Colombia’s Angie Umbacia (6-11, 11-8, 11-13, 11-6, 11-6) overcame Ecuador’s Eunice Galvez (7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-5) to top her group.
It was the same for Emme Arias who concluded her group matches with victory over Peru’s Paola Mori (11-4, 11-9, 11-6); whilst Esmerlyn Castro accounted for Peru’s Tatiana Nieto (5-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 11-3). The previous day Emme Arias had beaten Canada’s Alicia Cote (11-6, 13-11, 12-10), Esmerlyn Castro had overcome Argentina’s Agustina Iwasa (10-12, 11-7, 11-4, 10-12, 11-9).
Clear cut decisions, for Mabelyn Enriquez life was somewhat different; having overcome Rachel Yang of the United States the previous day in three straight games (12-10, 11-7, 11-3), she was beaten in her concluding group match by Mexico’s Gladys Banqueto in four games (11-7, 8-11, 11-7, 15-13). In her opening contest Gladys Banqueto had experienced defeat at the hands of Rachel Yang in straight games (11-9, 11-5, 11-5).
Thus games ratio was needed to decide the final order; it was first place for Mabelyn Enriquez (4:3) finishing ahead of Grace Yang (3:3) and Gladys Banqueto (3:4).
Second place meant progress to the main draw; a situation that was also the end result for the other leading group names who had experienced defeat; for Angie Umbacia, Rachel Yang, Andrea Estrada, Alicia Cote and Agustina Iwasa the door is still open
Early rounds of the main draw will be played on Saturday 16th September.
