Previous success a factor, Mizuki Oikawa and Andrea Landrieu book final places

Impressive performances and both having enjoyed previous success in ITTF World Tour or ITTF Challenge Series Under 21 Men’s Singles events, Japan’s Mizuki Oikawa and Frenchman Andrea Landrieu emerged successful at the semi-final stage of proceedings on the morning of Saturday 7th October at the 2017 ITTF Challenge Polish Open in Czestochowa.

The success of Mizuki Oikawa in reaching the final of the Under 21 Men’s Singles event was no great surprise, he commenced matters as the top seed; the appearance of Andrieu Landrieu was no massive upset but it did raise the eyebrows and it does underline the progress being made by the young man, who in 2011 at the European Youth Championships in Kazan won the Cadet Boys’ Singles title. He started his journey in the no.4 seeded position.

Impressively, Mizuki Oikawa accounted for Russia’s Sadi Ismailov, the no.6 seed, in the penultimate round, having the previous day overcome Singapore’s Lucas Tan (11-2, 11-8, 11-8), Hong Kong’s Li Hon Ming (13-11, 10-12, 11-9, 15-13) and Poland’s Marek Badowsk, the no.17 seed (12-10, 9-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-5) to reserve his place in the round of the last eight.

Good form; that good form continued; at the quarter-final stage Mizuki Oikawa ended the hopes of Slovenia’s Darko Jorgic, the no.7 seed (14-12, 11-6, 8-11, 11-4).

Matters very much as status predicted but in the top half of the draw, in addition to Mizuki Oikawa there was one further most creditable performance. In the third round Denmark’s Tobias Rasmussen, the no.19 seed, beat Kazakhstan’s Kirill Gerassimenko, the no.3 seed (9-11, 11-6, 11-7, 8-11, 11-8), prior to experiencing defeat in the next round at the hands of Sadi Ismailov (11-1, 11-7, 11-5).

Meanwhile, in the opposite half of the draw, Andrea Landrieu was the player to cause the upset of note as proceedings advanced to the latter stages.

 

Having the previous day accounted for Poland’s Maciej Kubik (12-10, 11-6, 11-6), Gleb Shamruk of Belarus (11-5, 11-7, 11-6) and compatriot Joe Seyfried, the no.14 seed (12-10, 11-9, 10-12, 11-3), he ended the hopes of Hong Kong’s Lam Siu Hang, the no.2 seed (12-14, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7) the winner earlier this year in Qatar.
The final is scheduled for later in the day.
