Tragically on Sunday 5th February 1995, Hungary’s Janos Molnar was killed in a car accident en route to a national ranking tournament; he was only 13 years old at the time. Sadly his mother was also killed, when their BMW 520 car hit a tree some 18 kilometres before the venue. Younger brother, Krisztian, eight years old at time survived. He progressed to gain honours at the European Youth Championships in 1999 and 2001.
Following the death of Janos Molnar, an international tournament was staged in his memory in 1996; the event has now become an annual fixture on the international calendar.
Organised by the Hungarian Table Tennis Association in association with the BVSC Budapest Table Tennis Club, the venue for the tournament, entry is open to national and regional associations as well as to individual clubs.
All events are organised in two stages, a group phase followed by knock-out.
