All unbeaten on the opening day of action, Archana Girish Kamath experienced defeat at the hands of Italy’s Veronica Mosconi (5-11, 13-11, 3-11, 11-9, 11-8). Similarly Yumeno Soma suffered against Nadezhda Bogdanova of Belarus (11-7, 6-11, 12-10, 14-12), whilst for Charlotte Carey, it was a reverse when facing Austria’s Caroline Mischek (7-11, 12-10, 7-11, 12-10, 11-7).
Defeats for three leading names, for three more there were close calls. Italy’s Giorgia Piccolin needed the full five games to beat India’s Moumita Das (11-5, 11-9, 8-11, 7-11, 11-5) as did Laura Pfeffer of France when confronting Estonia’s Airi Avameri (9-11, 11-8, 11-5, 6-11, 12-10).
Victory by the very narrowest of margins for Laura Pfeffer, it was not much different for Alina Nikitchanka of Belarus, she was extended the full five games distance by Belgium’s Nathalie Marchetti (11-7, 6-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-3).
Meanwhile, in the remaining two groups, life was less testing for the leading names but by no means comfortable.
The host nation’s Zhang Xuan overcame India’s Selena Selvakumar (8-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-3); Korea’s Kang Dayeon ended the hopes of Maharyta Baltushite of Belarus (10-12, 11-7, 11-7, 11-2).
A draw of 16 players, the opening round of the Under 21 Women’s Singles event will be played on Friday 24th November.
