Chilean stalwart, troubles times for Paulina Vega

Ever reliable, ever present, the backbone of Chilean success over the years, for Paulina Vega it was not the best of times on Wednesday 7th March at the 2018 Latin American Senior Championships in the Cuban capital city of Havana.

The top seed, it was one defeat and one win in the initial stage of proceedings; the saving grace is that players finishing in first and second places in each group advance to the main draw, were thwarted.

She was beaten by Brazil’s Jessica Yamada (11-5, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5) before overcoming Cuba’s Daniela Fonseca (11-4, 11-9, 11-7).

Problems for Paulina Vega, for the other leading names there were no such troubles; first place in the group was secured. Bruna Takahashi, like Jessica Yamada from Brazil, beat Chile’s Cristal Menesis (11-9, 11-6, 11-2) and Cuba’s Shelly Machado (11-9, 11-1, 11-6) to justify her second seeded position.

Similarly, Colombia’s Paula Medina, the third seed and Gui Lin, the fourth seed and also from Brazil, enjoyed success. Paula Medina accounted for Janae Lewis of Barbados (11-5, 11-2, 11-5) and the host nation’s Estela Crespo (11-7, 11-8, 11-7); Gui Lin overcame Thalia de Armas, like Estela Crespo from Cuba (11-5, 11-8, 11-3) and the Dominican Republic’s Yasiris Ortiz (11-4, 11-5, 11-4).

Meanwhile, in the Men’s Singles event where the leading names completed just one match, it was success for Brazil’s Eric Jouti and Thiago Monteiro as it was for Chile’s Gustavo Gomez and Felipev Olivares.

Eric Jouti, the top seed, overcame El Salvador’s Oscar Villalta (12-10, 11-4, 11-4), Gustavo Gomez, the no.2 seed, defeated Argentina’s Santiago Lorenzo (8-11, 12-10, 16-14, 11-6). Similarly, Felipe Olivares, the no.3 seed, accounted for Daniel Len, like Santiago Lorenzo from Argentina (11-1, 11-4, 11-3), not to be outdone, Thiago Monteiro, the no.4 seed, proved too strong and too experienced for Kristian Doughty of Barbados (11-8, 12-14, 11-6, 11-3).

Proceedings in Cuba conclude on Friday 9th March.
