Beyond expectations for Zhang Wanling; for Archana Girish Kamath, like Swastika Ghosh from India, it was quite the reverse scenario, the no.2 seed, she experienced a surprise first round defeat at the hands of Slovakia’s Tatiana Kulukova (14-12, 9-11, 6-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-5, 11-8).

Success for Tatiana Kulukova but the success was short-lived; in the very next round she was beaten by Leili Mostafavi of France, the no.7 seed (11-6, 11-8, 11-8, 8-11, 13-11).

At the quarter-final stage Leili Mostafavi meets Serbia’s Sabina Surjan, the top seed; Zhang Wanling confronts Lucie Gauthier of France, the no.4 seed. Sabina Surjan book her last eight place courtesy of success against Egypt’s Farida Badawy (12-10, 11-6, 11-6, 11-7); Lucie Gauthier ended the hopes of Hungary’s Helga Daria (11-7, 13-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7).

Surprises in the top half of the draw, in the lower half matters progressed very much according to plan.

Croatia’s Andrea Pavlovic, the no.3 seed, beat Hana Raharimanana (11-7, 14.12, 12-10, 10-12, 12-10), Selena Selvakumar, the no.6 seed, accounted for Hungary’s Fanny Harasztovich (11-9, 11-2, 15-13, 11-4). Likewise, Serbia’s Tijana Jokic, the no.5 seeds, ended the hopes of Belgium’s Estelle Duvivier (12-10, 11-6, 11-7, 11-6); Italy’s Jamila Laurenti, the no.8 seed, overcame Vony Ange Randriantsoa of France (11-4, 11-6, 11-8, 11-9).

At the quarter-final stage Andrea Pavlovic meets Selena Selvakumar, Tijana Jokic opposes Jamila Laurenti.

Meanwhile, in the Junior Girls’ Doubles event matters have advanced to the penultimate round. Tijana Jokic and Sabina Surjan, the top seeds, meet Lucie Gauthier and Leili Mostafavi, the no.3 seeds; Fanni Harasztovich and Andrea Pavlovic, the no.2 seed oppose surprise semi-finalists, the combination of Jamila Laurenti and Zhang Wanling.

In the round of the last eight pairs, Jamila Laurenti and Zhang Wanling upset the order of merit by beating India’s Swastika Gosh and Selena Selvakumar, the no.4 seed. They emerged successful in four games 11-7, 8-11, 11-9, 11-7)
