After accounting for Argentina’s Martin Bentancor, the no.3 seed, at the quarter-final stage (11-8, 11-9, 11-4, 11-7); Guillerme Teodoro overcame Peru’s Rodrigo Hidalgo, the no.6 seed (11-3, 11-4, 11-5, 8-11, 11-9) and Thailand’s Yanapong Panagitgun, the top seed, to arrest the title (11-6, 11-4, 11-8, 11-7).
Notably Rodrigo Hidalgo was a player very much in form; in the round of the last eight he had beaten Austria’s Maciej Kolodziejczyk, the no.2 seed (11-8, 11-13, 11-5, 4-11, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5).
In the opposite half of the draw, at the latter stages, Yanapong Panagitgun beat Argentina’s Santiago Lorenzo (11-3, 11-8, 11-6, 11-3), prior to reserving his place in the final courtesy of success in opposition to Eduardo Tomoike, like Guilherme Teodoro from Brazil (13-11, 11-8, 8-11, 10-12, 11-8, 4-11, 11-9).
Success against the odds for Guilherme Teodoro, it was the same for Valentina Rios.
At the quarter-final stage she caused a major upset by beating Kazakhstan’s Zuresh Akasheva, the no.2 seed (11-9, 9-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-6), before recording a semi-final win over Brazil’s Livia Lima, the no.9 seed (11-9, 9-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-6), very much a player in form.
One round earlier she had beaten Guatemala’s Lucia Cordero, the no.3 seed (8-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-6, 9-11, 11-9). A place in the final booked, Valentina Rios maintained her form to beat Ecuador’s Nathaly Paredes, the no.4 seed (11-7, 4-11, 11-8, 11-5, 8-11, 8-11, 11-6).
Likewise, Nathaly Parades had caused a major upset en route to the final. After overcoming Singapore’s Gui Rui Xuan, the no.6 seed (5-11, 3-11, 13-11, 13-11, 11-9, 11-9), she accounted for Italy’s Jamila Laurenti, the top seed (11-9, 9-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-6), at the semi-final stage to reserve her place in the final.
Gold for Chile there was more gold; Natasha Ruiz beat Mariam Ruiz (11-9, 4-11, 11-9, 11-8) to secure the Cadet Girls’ Singles title (11-9, 4-11, 11-9, 11-8).
Meanwhile in the counterpart Cadet Boys’ Singles event, the top prize finished in Peruvian hands; Carlos Fernandez beat Costa Rica’s Alfredo Sanchez in the title deciding contest (11-3, 11-7, 11-8).
Titles for the visitors and there were titles for the host nation; Axel Bertolo won the Mini-Cadet Boys’ Singles event beating Sweden’s Elias Sjögren in the final (11-7, 11-4, 11-5); in the corresponding Mini Cadet Girls’ Singles event, there was success for Rebecca Gomez, she beat colleague, Manuela Pereyra (11-9, 11-2, 7-11, 11-9) to reserve the top step of the podium.
Play completed in the ITTF World Junior Circuit event, attention now turns to the two day Road to Buenos Aires – Latin American tournament; play commences on Saturday 14th April
