Top seed, Sharon Alguetti beat Canada’s David Xu, 10-12, 11-8, 11-8, 5-11, 11-8); Artur Grela, the no.2 seed accounted for Yang Quiong (11-5, 11-2, 11-8, 11-5), whilst Jeremy Hazin, the no.3 seed, overcame Colombia’s Santiago Montes (11-7, 11-7, 11-6, 11-13, 11-6). Not to be left out Victor Liu, the no.4 seed, ended the hopes of the host nation’s Kenny Jiang (10-12, 11-7, 11-6, 11-6, 11-5).
However, further down the list there were notable casualties; Hungary’s Csaba Andras, Jordan’s Khaled Khader and Chile’s Jorge Paredes, alongside Switzerland’s Diogo Girod all experienced somewhat unexpected defeats.
Csaba Andras, the no.6 seed was beaten by Canada’s Alexander Bu (8-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-4, 11-3); Khaled Khader, the no.9 seed, suffered at the hands of Gal Alguetti of the United States (12-10, 7-11, 11-9, 15-13, 12-10).
Likewise, similar to Khaled Khader, Jorge Paredes, the no.10 seed and Switzerland’s Dorian Girod, the no.12 seed experienced defeats when facing adversaries from the United States. Jayden Zhou ended the hopes of Jorge Paredes in a tense seven games encounter (11-9, 9-11, 6-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-9, 13-11); Michael Minh Tran defeated Dorian Goud in an equally close contest (11-4, 11-9, 10-12, 9-11, 12-14, 11-9, 11-9).
Meanwhile, in the Junior Girls’ Singles event, the leading names were not required to compete in the opening round. However, in the matches completed there were two results of note. Sabrina Zhu of the United States and Chile’s Claudia Infante both caused upsets, both beat higher rated Canadian adversaries.
Sabrina Zhou, the no.20 seed, overcame Canada’s Isabelle Xiong, the no.9 seed (8-11, 11-4, 5-11, 11-9, 12-10, 3-11, 11-2), Claudia Infante, the no.14 seed, ended the aspirations of Benita Zhou, the no.10 seed (11-6, 11-9, 7-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-4).
