The no.7 seed, in the opening round she accounted for the Dominican Republic’s Eva Brito, the no.4 seed (11-8, 3-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7), prior to emerging successful in opposition to El Salvador’s Estefania Ramirios, the no.10 seed (11-2, 5-11, 16-14, 13-11, 12-10).
Notably, the previous day, Eva Brito had finished in second place in her group behind Venezuela’s Neridee Niño who in the main draw duly continued her progress. The no.27 seed, she beat Trinidad and Tobago’s Catherine Spicer, the no.28 seed (11-8, 11-5, 11-6, 11-6), prior to reserving her place in the last eight courtesy of success in opposition to Cuba’s Shelly Machado Fernandez, the no.19 seed (7-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-9, 11-6, 11-8).
One surprise Women’s Singles quarter-finalist and there was one more; a reversal of fortunes for the Dominican Republic. Yasiri Ortiz, the no.18 seed, recorded a second round win against Colombia’s Luisa Zuluaga, the no.3 seed (11-6, 11-9, 11-6, 14-12) to keep her medal hopes alive.
Otherwise, it was success for the leading names.
In addition to Yadira Silva, Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz and Melanie Diaz both advanced to the quarter-final round. Adriana Diaz, the top seed, secured her place courtesy of success against Venezuela’s Gremlis Arvelo, the no.25 seed (11-7, 11-9, 11-8, 11-6); in an equally imposing manner, Melanie Diaz, the no.6 seed, ended the hopes of Guyana’s Trenace Lowe, the no.21 seed (11-5, 9-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-7).
Likewise, there was more success for Cuba; safely through to the second round, Lisi Castillo, the no.5 seed, beat Guatemala’s Mabelyn Enriquez, the no.9 seed (11-6, 7-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-3); Idalys Lovet, the no.8 seed, overcame Mexico’s Marbella Aceves, the no.26 seed (11-13, 11-5, 5-11, 11-4, 11-1, 11-1).
Success for visitors to Barranquilla and there was also success for the host nation. Paula Medina, the no.2 seed, caused Guatemala more pain by overcoming Andrea Estrada, the no.15 seed (11-7, 11-4, 11-5, 11-8).
At the quarter-final stage Adriana Diaz meets Lisi Castillo, Yadira Silva opposes Yasiris Ortiz; in the opposite half of the draw Neridee Niño plays Idalys Lovet, Melanie Diaz confronts Paula Medina.
Play concludes in Barranquilla on Tuesday 24th July.
