Singapore’s Zhang Wanling and Dorian Zheng of France may not have ended the second day of play, Thursday 2nd August, at the 2018 Hang Seng Hong Kong Junior and Cadet Open with gold medals adorning their necks when the team titles were awarded but both impressed the organisers with their performances.

They are the first recipients of a newly introduced award: “The Best Challenger Award”.

Based on the Under 18 Boys’ and Under 18 Girls’ World Rankings for July 2018, the results gained in the singles matches in the team events were taken into consideration.

The recipients are the players who each day who caused the biggest surprises; the greatest points difference.

Only one award is made each day.

Notably on the opening day of play, Zhang Wanling beat Hong Kong’s Lee Ka Yee (11-13, 9-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-8); on the second day, Dorian Zheng accounted for Thailand’s Yanapong Panagitgun (7-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8, 13-11).

Each player received US$ 50.00 and a certificate.

“It was a very tight match. I had confidence before the match and I was very happy to win the match against Panagitgun. It’s my first time to play in Hong Kong and I was very glad to win the “Best Challenger Award”. I will try my best in the remaining matches.” Dorian Zheng

A splendid initiative, we await the names of the winners for the remaining days of play.
