Success for Jacobo Vahnish but it was hard earned success; at the final hurdle he was stretched to the very limit by Peru’s Carlos Fernandez in a thrilling encounter (11-8, 5-11, 6-11, 11-5, 13-11).

Earlier, in the later stages he had accounted for Argentina’s Christian Azcoaga (11-8, 12-10, 10-12, 11-9), prior to reserving his place in the final courtesy of success against Puerto Rico’s Angel Naranjo (11-6, 9-11, 11-7, 11-7). In the opposite half of the draw, in the quarter-finals Carlos Fernandez had also ended Argentine hopes, he beat Lautaro Sato (12-10, 11-1, 11-13, 11-3), prior to overcoming the host nation’s Alfredo Sanchez (11-5, 11-6, 11-0).

Meanwhile, in the Girls’ Singles event, there were also tense moments for Giulia Takahashi.

At the quarter-final stage she was extended the full five games distance by Chile’s Macarena Montecino (11-5, 11-4, 7-11, 3-11, 11-7), prior to rather more comfortably ending Mexican hopes. In the penultimate round, she accounted for Marbella Aceves (11-4, 9-11, 11-4, 11-3), before securing the top prize at the expense of Arantxa Cossio Aceves (11-6, 11-5, 11-6).

In the opposite half of the draw, in the round of the last eight, Arantxa Cossio Aceves had beaten Colombia’s Juliana Rodriguez (8-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-8), prior to recording a five games success in opposition to Ecuador’s Karen Muñoz (12-14, 11-3, 7-11, 11-2, 11-7).
