Contrary to status, Puerto Rico ‘C’ represented by Kristal Melendez and Edmarie Leon alongside Chinese Taipei’s Liu Ru-Yun and Chen Tsai-Ni remained unbeaten to secure pole positions.

Kristal Melendez and Edmarie Leon recorded a three-one success in opposition to the El Salvador ‘A’ combination of Kenny Orellana and Cristina Machado, the no.2 seeds, the player to attract the attention being Kristal Melendez. She beat both Kenny Orellana (11-6, 11-5, 11-2) and Cristina Machado (11-6, 8-11, 11-7, 5-11, 11-9) whilst teaming with Edmarie Leon to secure the doubles (7-11, 11-6, 11-4, 4-11, 11-5).

Impressive, it was even more impressive from Liu Ru-Yun and Chen Tsai-Ni. They accounted for the Puerto Rico ‘B’ team duo of Brianna Burgos and Sonelis Gonzalez, the no.4 seeds by three matches to nil.

Defeat for Brianna Burgos and Sonelis Gonzalez but it was their only reverse; second place in the group and progress to the main draw was the eventual outcome. Alas for Kenny Orellana and Cristina Machado they also experienced a three-one defeat when facing the combination of colleague Victoria Guevara and Sofia Perez, thus it was the end of the road.

In the Cadet Girls’ Team event, outfits finishing in first and second positions in each group advance to the main draw.

Two surprise first places, in the one remaining group in the Cadet Girls’ Team event it was success as anticipated. The United States combination of Lavanya Maruthapandian and Ava Fu, the no.3 seeds, duly secured pole position.

Proceedings in the Cadet Girls’ Team events conclude on Thursday 16th August.
