Top seeds, the Latin American partnership of Costa Rica’s Ricardo Azofeifa and Peru’s Carlos Fernandez, justified their status on the first day of play, Wednesday 15th August, at the 2018 El Salvador Junior and Cadet Open in San Salvador.

They secured first place in their group, without experiencing the loss of a single individual match.

However, the outfit to attract the attention was that of Sahil Puri and Jayden Zhou of the United States.

They beat the no.4 seeds, Guatemala’s Alfredo Sanchez and José Perez by three matches to nil, remaining unbeaten to top their group. Alfredo Sanchez and José Perez duly finished in second place and thus advanced to the main draw; teams finishing in first and second positions advance to the next stage.

Otherwise, for the leading outfits in an event where there were seven groups in the initial phase it was first place, success but not without some moments of trepidation.

Puerto Rico ‘A’ represented by Angel Naranjo and Jabdiel Torres, the no.2 seeds, needed the full five matches to beat the United States combination of Jonathan Qin and Yed Seth, as did Brazil’s Kenzo Carmo and Denis Oshiro, the no.5 seeds, when opposing Puerto Rico ‘B’ team combination of Pablo Figueroa and Oscar Birriel.

Star of the show for Puerto Rico ‘A’ was Jabdiel Torres. He beat Jonathon Qin (1-11, 11-9, 11-8, 5-11, 11-5), prior to in the vital fifth match of the engagement accounting for Ved Seth (11-5, 11-7, 11-9).

Meanwhile, for Brazil, Kenzo Carmo was the mainstay; he overcame Pablo Figueroa (11-7, 11-6, 11-8) and Oscar Birriel (11-9, 11-9, 11-9) to set the scene for Denis Oshiro to be the hero. He duly obliged, he accounted for Pablo Figueroa in four games (6-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-9).

Testing times for Puerto Rico ‘A’ and Brazil; for the remaining highly rated outfits, as with Ricardo Azofeifa and Carlos Fernandez, group first places were secured without due alarm.

Costa Rica’s Alfredo Sanchez and José Perez enjoyed a trouble free day as did the combination of Peru’s Joel Cisneros and Puerto Rico’s Yadier Lopes. Likewise, it was top spot for Chinese Taipei’s Yang Tsan-Wei and Wang Chen-You.

Play in the Cadet Boys’ Team event concludes on Thursday 16th August.
