The win recorded by Emil Santos was as predicted; the success of Yasiris Ortiz was marginally contrary to expectations.
Emil Santos, who we first saw on the international stage at the 2005 ITTF World Cadet Challenge on home soil in Santo Domingo, commenced matters as the top seed. At the semi-final stage on the concluding day of play he accounted for colleague Isaac Vila, the no.5 seed, the player with whom he had won the Men’s Doubles title. He emerged successful in a closely contested full distance encounter (11-4, 14-16, 11-8, 11-6, 7-11, 6-11, 11-6).
A place in the final reserved, life was less dramatic; he secured the title at the expense of Samuel Galvez, also from the Dominican Republic and the no.2 seed (11-9, 11-9, 12-10, 11-7). In the opposite half of the draw, in the penultimate round, Samuel Galvez had ended the progress of Guyana’s Christopher Franklin, the no.7 seed (11-9, 12-10, 11-9, 11-5).
Success for the top seed in the Men’s Singles event, in the counterpart Women’s Singles competition it was victory for the no.2 seed. In an all Dominican Republic final, Yasiris Ortiz beat Eva Brito, the top seed and the player with whom she had won Women’s Doubles gold (11-8, 5-11, 13-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6) to claim the title.
Earlier at the semi-final stage the duo had ended the hopes of Guyana; by the very narrowest of margins, Yasiris Ortiz had beaten Trenace Lowe, the no.4 seed (11-4, 12-14, 11-5, 11-4, 8-11, 5-11, 13-11), rather less dramatically, Eva Brito had overcome Chelsea Edghill, the no.5 seed (11-9, 11-3, 11-6, 11-2).
Three titles each, Emil Santos and Yasiris Ortiz departed Kingston, the tournament’s most successful players.
