An upset, most certainly especially when taking into consideration that at the Rio 2018 Paralympic Games, Lian Hao had partnered Ma Ma Lin to Class 9-10 gold.
Top place against the odds for Koyo Iwabuchi, Nariaki Kakita and Naoya Nagashita in a group organised event; runners up spot for Lian Hao and Kong Weijie. Third place finished in the hands of the Hong Kong outfit comprising Wong Chi Yin, Lam Ka Wai and Samuel Cheung Ping Kwai; Chinese Taipei’s Lee Yao-Tang and Su Jin-Sian concluded the day in fourth spot.
Defeat for the top seeds, in the two further Men’s Team events that were decided on the penultimate day of play, it was a different scenario, it was success for the favourites; moreover it was success for the Korea Republic.
The combination of Cha Sooyong, Park Jincheol and Nam Kiwon finished in first position in Class 1-2 ahead of Japan’s Nobuhiro Minami and Mitsuhiro Matsuo; Chinese Taipei’s Chen Fu-Kuei and Chu Wei-Chung secured third place, fourth position being the lot of Kuwait’s Hamed Latif and Khalifa Alqasem.
Likewise in Class 11 where there were four teams competing on a group basis, Kim Gitae and Jeoung Kyuyoung struck gold. Similar to Cha Sooyong, Park Jincheol and Nam Kiwon, they did not surrender a single individual match. They concluded the day ahead of Hong Kong’s Wan Wai Lok, Leung Chung Yan and Tsoi Ming Fai; Japan’s Takashi Takeda, Toshiya Takahashi and Yudai Kikawada secured third place, fourth position finished in the hands of Indonesia’s Dwi Hajiyanto and Achmad Yusuf.
