Just as the previous day when in Class 3, the likes of Sweden’s Anna-Carin Ahlquist and China’s Xue Juan had topped their groups without due alarm and the latter’s colleague, Zhou Ying alongside Serbia’s Borislava Peric-Rankovic had followed suit in Class 4; it was the same scenario on the second day of play.
Three groups in the first stage in Class 1-2, the highest rated all emerged successful.
Korea Republic’s Seo Suyeon, the top seed, accounted for Brazil’s Catia da Silva Oliveira (8-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-5) to conclude her initial phase matches unbeaten; similarly Italy’s Giadi Rossi and Russia’s Nadejda Pushpasheva, the respective second and third seeds, all finished their first phase matches in style.
Giadi Rossi beat Isabelle Lafaye of France (11-3, 11-9, 11-3); in a similar manner, Nadejda Pushpasheva overcame both Poland’s Dorota Buclaw (15-13, 11-5, 11-5) and Femke Cobben of the Netherlands (13-11, 11-3, 11-7).
Meanwhile, in Class 5, where also three groups were the order of proceedings in the initial phase, the top three names all concluded their contests with impressive straight games wins. Korea Republic’s Kang Oejeong beat Hong Kong’s Wong Pui Yi (11-5, 11-5, 11-4), Sweden’s Ingela Lundbäck overcame Chinese Taipei’s Hsiao Shu-Chin (11-8, 11-8, 11-9); not to be outdone, Israel’s Caroline Tabib accounted for Fiji’s Merewalesi Roden (11-9, 11-6, 12-10).
Play in the main draw of all matches in the Women’s Singles wheelchair classes commences on Friday 19th October.
