Arguably the biggest surprise was in the Under 13 Girls’ Singles event where Colombia’s Juliana Lozada, the top seed, had to settle for second place in the group, she was beaten by Mexico’s Timara Martin (6-11, 8-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-9).

Also, in the same event, Guatemala’s Jenny Cux, the no.4 seed, had to settle for third position and thus no place in the main draw; she finished behind Peru’s Valentina Zea and Chile’s Romina Barrientos.

Otherwise, for the leading names in the Under 13 Girls’ Singles event, it was first place without defeat; Puerto Rico’s Edmarie Leon, the no.2 seed and colleague Kristal Melendez, the no.3 seed, duly topped their groups.

Surprise outcomes, in the Under 13 Boys’ Singles event, amongst the leading players, the upsets were much less prevalent. The Dominican Republic’s Oswaldy Reyes lost to Panama’s David Herrera (11-9, 11-6, 11-9) and had to settle for second place in the group; conversely, for the three higher rated it was top spot without alarm. Puerto Rico’s Oscar Birriel, Mexico’s Rogelio Castro and Ecuador’s Diego Piguave all enjoyed a trouble free day.

Meanwhile, in the Under 11 Boys’ Singles event the player to raise the eyebrows was Ecuador’s Joshua Robayo; he beat Guatemala’s Fernando Ton, the no.3 seed (10-12, 11-9, 11-6, 11-7) to secure first place. Defeat for Fernando Ton but not for Chile’s Gabriel Flores; nor for the Dominican Republic’s Rafael Cabrera, the respective top two seeds. They remained unbeaten as did Puerto Rico’s Yadier Lopez, the no.4 seed.

Success for Ecuador, it was the same in the Under 11 Girls’ Singles event. Maria Borja, the no.4 seed, duly finished in first place in her group as did Maybelline Melendez but somewhat against the odds, she beat Costa Rica’s Sofia Perez, the no.2 seed (11-3, 5-11, 11-8, 11-5) to reserve pole position. Likewise, there was defeat for Beatriz Flore, the no.3 seed, she lost to Chile’s Franciska Riquelme (11-5, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8) and had to settle for runners up spot, Franciska Riquelme remained unbeaten to top the group.

Notably the leading name, the Dominican Republic’s Shary Muñoz remained unbeaten to reserve first place.

The leading pairs in the doubles events have yet to start their quest for honours.
