Defeat for Agus Suntanto but it was his only defeat; thus he concluded the day in second place in the group and advanced to the main draw. In the two further groups, compatriot Tatok Hardiyanto, the no.2 seed and Gerardus Van Grunsven of the Netherlands, the no.3 seed, both remained unbeaten to secure first places.
Meanwhile in the remaining wheelchair categories the top names ended the day unbeaten but there were surprises.
Competing in Class 1-2, the host nation’s Miguel Angel Toledo accounted for Frenchman Benoît Besset, the no.4 seed (6-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-8) to secure first place; for Benoît Besset it was his only defeat thus a main draw place was reserved. Problems for one notable name but not for the top three; Ukraine’s Oleksandr Yezyk, Russia’s Evgenii Riazantsev and Poland’s Tomislav Jakimczuk duly secured first positions without experiencing defeat.
Success for leading names, in Class 3 it was success for the players who headed each of the six groups and eventual quarter-final places. Ukraine’s Vasyl Petruinov and Russia’s Vladimir Toporkov all advanced to the round of the last eight after securing first positions in their group stage matches, as did the Austrian duo of Egon Kramminger and Manfred Dollmann. Likewise, Spain’s Roberto Rodriguez and Frenchman Sylvain Noel duly kept their medal hopes alive.
Progress as anticipated but in Class 4 there was a surprise; Indonesia’s Adyos Astar and Romania’s Petru Ifrosa, the top two seeds, duly secured first places in their respective groups but for Yanang Gunaya, like Adyos Astar from Indonesia, there was defeat. He was beaten by Sweden’s Bernt Magnus Norgren (7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 11-7). The Swede remained unbeaten to top the group with Yanang Gunaya in second place.
