Vitor Ishiy and Bruna Takahashi, the no.4 seeds, having accounted for Cuba’s Andy Pereira and Idalys Lovet, the no.3 seeds (11-3, 11-4, 13-11) experienced defeat at the hands of Mexico’s Marcos Madrid and Yadira Silva, the no.8 seeds (11-3, 9-11, 11-8, 11-4).
Similarly, in the same round, Eric Jouti and Gui Lin, the no.5 seeds, departed proceedings; they were beaten in five games by Puerto Rico’s Brian Afanador and Adriana Diaz, the no.2 seeds (11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-8).
At the semi-final stage Brian Afanador and Adriana Diaz meet Canada’s Eugene Wang and Zhang Mo, the no.3 seeds; Marcos Madrid and Yadira Silva oppose the United States combination of Kanak Jha and Wu Yue, the top seeds.
Eugene Wang and Zhang Mo booked their place in the penultimate round courtesy of success against Argentina’s Horacio Cifuentes and Camila Arguelles, the no.6 seeds (11-5, 11-2, 11-4), having one round earlier ousted Nikhil Kumar and Lily Zhang of the United States, the no.11 seeds (11-9, 11-8, 11-4).
Meanwhile, in the opposite half of the draw; following success against Canada’s Marko Medjugorac and Alicia Côté, the no.21 seeds (11-3, 7-11, 11-9, 11-4), Kanak Jha and Wu Yue, likewise caused Argentine anguish. They ended the hopes of Gaston Alto and Ana Codina, the no.15 seeds (13-15, 13-11, 11-6, 11-7). Notably, in the previous round, Gaston Alto and Ana Codina had caused somewhat of an upset by beating the host nation’s Juan Lamadrid and Paulina Vega, the no.7 seeds (11-5, 11-7, 5-11, 11-9).
The semi-finals will be played on Saturday 24th November, the final one day later as action concludes in Santiago.
