Wang Yimu, after accounting for England’s James Smith (6-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-8, 11-6), caused a second round upset by overcoming Spain’s Francisco Miguel Ruiz, the no.11 seed (8-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-6, 11-7).
Similarly in the second round Ivor Ban upset the order of merit, following success against Spain’s Alberto Vilardell (11-4, 7-11, 11-8, 1-11, 11-4, 11-8), he overcame the Czech Republic’s Frantisek Onderka, the no.13 seed (2-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-7).
The form of earlier in the day maintained; it was the same for Andrea Puppo who beat qualifiers Elwin Huiden of the Netherlands (11-7, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8, 6-11, 11-3) and Portugal’s David Bessa (11-9, 11-7, 8-11, 5-11, 11-3, 12-10) to reserve his third round place.
Success without the need for a deciding seventh game; it was the same for Aadarsh Om Chhetri and Tao Yuchang. Aadarsh Om Chhetri beat Spain’s Norbert Tauler (11-7, 11-7, 11-7, 11-6), followed by success against Chile’s Andres Martinez, the no.12 seed (7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-7, 12-11); Tao Yuchang accounted for Corentin Lemire of France (11-9, 11-5, 11-7, 11-5), before prevailing against the host nation’s Tiago Li, the no.6 seed (11-7, 11-7, 11-8, 12-10).
Defeats for notable names but for the most prominent of all there was success; all from India and enjoying direct entries to the second round.
Manav Vikash Thakkar, the top seed, beat China’s Xiong Mengyang (13-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-6); meanwhile, in a similarly impressive manner, colleagues all ended French hopes. Manush Utpalbhai Shah, the no.2 seed, ousted Martin Baechler (11-5, 11-9, 11-6, 11-9), Snehit Suravajjula, the no.3 seed, overcame Alexis Lebrun (11-6, 10-12, 11-5, 9-11, 12-10, 11-4). Rather more comfortably, Jeet Chandra, the no.4 seed, halted any aspirations harboured by Dylan Chaperon (11-7, 11-9, 11-7, 11-6).
