Even the Super Bowl had to take second place in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico on the evening of Sunday 3rd February as Adriana Diaz captured the women’s title at the Universal 2019 Pan America Cup; Brazil’s Hugo Calderano, having one match earlier secured the men’s title.

Now attention in the continent turns from the Caribbean island to Cancun in Mexico; the four day 2019 Central American Junior and Cadet Championships commenced on Wednesday 6th February.

Is there a player on duty in the city located on the Yucatan Peninsula who, in the next decade, can match the achievements of Hugo Calderano or Adriana Diaz? If so that person will have just claim to be regarded as Pan Americas greatest ever!

Hugo Calderano retained his men’s singles title; Adriana Diaz achieved history.

Last year in July she won the girls’ singles title at the Pan American Junior Championships, in November she clinched women’s singles gold at the Pan American Championships. It means that in any continent in the world, from Asia to Europe, Africa to Oceania, she is the only person ever to hold the junior championships title, the senior championships title and the continental cup title at the same time. No other player, male or female has ever achieved the feat!

Further her efforts encompass two continents; that of North America and Latin America; she even puts Japan’s mighty Tomokazu Harimoto into the shadows!

It is a prodigious goal for the young players on duty in Cancun but one that is a great motivator; both Hugo Calderano and Adriana Diaz have shown they can compete against the best.

Panama’s Jacobo Vahnish and Daniel Araya head the junior boys’ singles list. Guatemala’s Lucia Cordero, who competed in Guaynabo, followed by El Salvador’s Monica Mendoza, is the top seed in the junior girls’ singles event. In the cadet boys’ singles and cadet girls’ singles competitions; Mexico immediately followed by El Salvador leads the way. Rogelio Castro and Edgardo Sanchez are the top names in the former, in the latter it is Aurora Andrade followed by Cristina Machado.

A total of 53 boys and 46 girls compete in Cancun; the national associations represented being Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico and Panama.

Play commences with the team events.
