Flying the flag high for Mexico, Sebastian Cano and Lucia Fernandez, the no.13 seeds, emerged the junior mixed doubles winners.
After recording a quarter-final success against Guatemala’s Sergio Carrillo and Hidalyn Zapata, the no.3 seeds (7-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-7), in the penultimate round they accounted for colleagues Mauricio Cayetano and Marbella Aceves, the no.17 seeds (11-5, 15-13, 11-7), the winners one match earlier in opposition to El Salvador’s Diego Orantes and Monica Mendoza, the top seeds (11-8, 11-6, 11-9).
A place in the final booked, the good form continued; they overcame Diego Vazquez and Monica Muñoz, the no.4 seeds and also from Mexico (8-11, 7-11, 13-11, 11-3, 11-5) to secure the title.
Notably in the opposite half of the draw, Diego Vazquez and Monica Muñoz had ousted compatriots Dario Arce and Clio Barcenas, the no.10 seeds (14-12, 11-7, 14-12), the pair who in the round of the last eight had ended the hopes of Guatemala’s Kevin Ruano and Lucia Cordero, the no.2 seeds (8-11, 11-5, 13-11, 11-5).
Similarly promoting the Mexican cause, Leonardo Perez and Tamara Martin, the no.10 seeds, upset the order of merit to secure the cadet mixed doubles top prize.
Victory over Guatemala’s Diego de la Cruz and Monica Mejia, the no.4 seeds, at the quarter-final stage (14-12, 11-7, 8-11, 12-14, 11-9); next they accounted for a pair very much in form. They beat colleagues Pablo Anguiano and Dominique Reyes (7-11, 11-4, 5-11, 11-8, 11-6), the winners the previous round in opposition to colleagues Jorge Buenrostro and Aurora Andrade, the no.2 seeds (11-8, 5-11, 12-10, 8-11, 12-10).
Hard fought contests; in the final life was less demanding; in an all host nation affair, they secured the title at the final expense of Rogelio Castro and Ixchel Reyes, the no.3 seeds (11-6, 11-9, 11-5). En route to the final, in the later rounds, Rogelio Castro and Ixchel Reyes had recorded a semi-final success against Panama’s David Herrera and Sofia Osario, the no.17 seeds (11-3, 11-8, 11-4); the shock quarter-final winners in opposition to El Salvador’s Edgardo Sanchez and Cristina Machado, the top seeds (13-11, 11-5, 11-6).
The mixed doubles events concluded, attention now turns to the junior boys’ singles, junior girls’ singles, cadet boys’ singles and cadet mixed doubles events; play concludes in Cancun on Saturday 9th February.
