The record maintained but for Chen Meng, it was a titanic struggle; against Wang Manyu in her opening match of the day she recovered from a two games to nil deficit to emerge victorious (13-15, 8-11, 11-8, 14-12, 14-12). Overall saved a total of six match points in a contest that lasted 92 minutes!
In the opening game Wang Manyu trailed 4-10 before recovering gain success. Later, in the fourth Chen Meng saved one match point, in the fifth she was down 7-10, levelled then saved two further match points, prior to succeeding.
“There were some ups and downs in the match but I think I performed well today, especially the fact I managed to come back when I was 4-10 down in the first game. I think it is acceptable to experience this kind of defeat. There are a lot of things for me to think about and learn. I have told myself not to be affected by this match.” Wang Manyu
A tense duel to open the day for Chen Meng, in her next two contests, it was little different. She had to recover from a two games to nil deficit to beat Sun Yingsha (4-11, 7-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-6), before in a third full distance duel of the day overcoming Liu Shiwen (11-4, 3-11, 11-5, 10-12, 11-8). It was for Liu Shiwen her second defeat of the day; prior to beating Wu Yang (11-3, 12-10, 11-9), she had experience defeat at the hands of Sun Yingsha (11-8, 11-4, 7-11, 11-5).
“I did not have a good rhythm at the beginning, Sun Yingsha is very fast. I made a full preparation for this match. I watched Sun’s footage till 2.30 am this morning. I should learn from her fighting spirit.” Chen Meng
The perfect record of Wang Manyu ended; it was the same for Ding Ning. After beating He Zhuojia (11-8, 5-11, 11-4, 11-9), she suffered at the hands of Wang Manyu (11-5, 11-6, 8-11, 7-11, 11-2) and Sun Yingsha (11-8, 11-8, 12-10).
Equally, there were problems for Zhu Yuling, one defeat on the opening day, she suffered again; she beat Sun Mingyang (7-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-9) but then lost to Chen Xingtong (11-8, 11-8, 12-10).
Meanwhile in the men’s event, Fan Zhendong and Liang Jingkun continued their winning ways. Each required to play two matches, Fan Zhendong beat both Wang Chuqin (12-10, 11-9, 9-11, 13-11) and by the very narrowest of decisions Xue Fei (12-10, 11-9, 4-11, 8-11, 12-10); Liang Jingkun accounted for Fang Bo (11-6, 11-8, 11-8) and Yan An (11-3, 8-11, 12-10, 11-9).
“It is not easy to win all the matches, especially as I have played the full five games in three matches out of five. This will largely boost my confidence. I did quite well in the first half of this tournament, hope I can do even better in the second half.” Fan Zhendong
Somewhat differently for Xu Xin, two defeats on the opening day, on the second day there was a further reverse; after overcoming Zhou Kai (11-8, 13-11, 11-9), he lost to Fang Bo (14-12, 7-11, 11-3, 11-8). However, the day ended on a bright note, he accounted for Yan An (11-7, 11-5, 11-5)
