Familiar faces in the present day Cuban national team, Livan Martinez and Daniela Fonseca Carrazana won the respective under 21 men’s singles and under 21 women’s singles titles at the 2019 Caribbean Championships in Georgetown, Guyana on Friday 25th March.

Meanwhile in the Masters event for players over 45 years of age Trevor Farley secured the men’s singles title, the counterpart top spot in the women’s singles event was secured by Jamaica’s Sandra Riettie.

The top seed, in the later rounds, Livan Martinez accounted for Marcus Smith from Barbados (11-3, 11-6, 12-10), followed by success against the Dominican Republic’s Mariano Lockward, the no.3 seed (11-13, 11-5, 9-11, 11-8, 11-4) and Guyana’s Shemar Britton, the no.4 seed (8-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-5) to seal the title.

“It’s the start of the year and another title so I’m very happy. Also, it is good preparation for the men’s singles event which is my major goal. I had several hard matches especially in the semi-final but I was able to adapt. Psychologically I was well prepared for the final, I had seen Shemar play. My task now is to focus on tomorrow’s matches and try to qualify for the 2020 ITT Pan American Cup.” Livan Martinez

In the opposite half of the draw, at the quarter-final stage Shemar Britton had accounted for Puerto Rico’s José Gabriel Perez, the no.6 seed (12-10, 11-6, 11-5), prior to overcoming Barbadian Tyrese Knight, the no.2 seed (8-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-5) to reserve his place in the final.

Success for Cuba, it was the same in the under 21 women’s singles event; Daniela Fonseca Carrazana, the no.2 seed, securing the title at the final expense of the Dominican Republic’s Esmerlyn Castro, the top seed (8-11, 11-2, 14-12, 11-8, 7-11, 13-11).

Earlier, Daniela Fonseca Carrazana had ended the hopes of Brabados; at the quarter-final stage she beat Kenady King before accounting for Janae Lewis, the no.3 seed (11-9, 11-6, 11-5) in the penultimate round. In the opposite half of the draw, at the same stages Esmerlyn Castro had accounted for Guyana’s Priscilla Greaves (12-10, 11-6, 11-7) followed by success in opposition to Trinidad and Tobago’s Btittany Joseph, the no.4 seed (11-7, 11-8, 11-4).

A bronze medal for Barbados in the under 21 women’s singles event; in the masters it was gold. Trevor Farley beat St Lucia’s Teddy Matthews (11-3, 11-7, 11-8), after having recorded a semi-final success against Martinique’s Jean-Michel Talba (11-3, 9-11, 11-4, 11-3). In the opposite half of the draw, at the semi-final stage Teddy Matthews had overcome Guyana’s Colin France (16-14, 11-9, 12-10).

Impressive from Trevor Farley, in the counter women’s event, organized on a group basis, Jamaica’s Sandra Riettie kept mind, body and soul together to secure the title. She finished ahead of Angela Reid from Barbados, Martinique’s Armelie Pruvost and Guyana’s Diane Chance.

Attention now turns to the men’s singles and women’s singles events; play concludes in Georgetown on Sunday 31st March.
