Success on the opening day of play when together, on the second day of action, Wednesday 3rd April, at the 2019 Central American Championships in Guatemala City, it was the same when apart.

Winners of mixed doubles title, Mexico’s Marcos Madrid and Yadira Silva added the respective men’s doubles and women’s doubles gold medals to their collection.

The top seeds, Marcos Madrid and compatriot Ricardo Villa, underlined their status as the favourites; after accounting for Guatemala’s Hector Gatica and Heber Moscoso, the no.3 seeds (9-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-3), the duo combined to secure the title at the expense of their teammates, the pairing of Miguel Lara and Carlos Zamora (12-10, 12-10, 15-13).

Defeat for Miguel Lara and Carlos Zamora but the outcome was somewhat better than could have been anticipated. They commenced play as the no.4 seeds, notably accounting for the host nation’s Allan Gutierrez and Kevin Montufar, the no.2 seeds in a penultimate round contest where it appeared they were doomed to defeat. They recovered from a two games to nil deficit to secure victory by the very narrowest of margins (8-11, 9-11, 11-2, 11-3, 12-10).

Success for Marcos Madrid and Ricardo Villa without needing the drama of a deciding game; in the women’s doubles event it was the same for Yadira Silva in harness with colleague Clio Barcenas.

Occupying the no.2 seeded position, they ended Guatemalan hopes. At the semi-final stage they beat Lucia Cordero and Hidalyn Zapata, the no.4 seeds (11-4, 9-11, 12-10, 11-6), prior to overcoming Mabelyn Enriquez and Andrea Montufar, the top seeds (11-6, 4-11, 12-10, 11-6) to arrest the title.

In the opposite half of the draw in the penultimate round Mabelyn Enriquez and Andrea Montufar had accounted for Mexico’s Marbella Aceves and Monica Muñoz (13-11, 11-9, 11-5), the pair who commenced proceedings in the no.3 seeded position.

Three titles decided, to date for Mexico it is three gold; it could not possibly have been a better start.
