Success earlier in the week in the mixed doubles event at the 2019 Central American Championships in Guatemala City, followed by titles secured in the respective men’s doubles and women’s doubles competitions, Mexico’s Marcos Madrid and Yadira Silva underlined the fact on Friday 5th April that they have every intention of adding to their collection.

Both retained their unbeaten records but neither was necessarily the player in the spotlight; that honour belonged to colleague, 16 year old Clio Barcenas; in the women’s singles quarter-finals she caused the biggest upset of the day.

The no.10 seed, she proved the nemesis of Guatemala. In the opening round she beat Hidalynn Zapata, the no.7 seed (12-10, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8, 5-11, 11-9), before causing an even bigger surprise by ending the hopes of Andrea Montufar, the no.3 seed (11-9, 11-5, 11-6, 11-4).

Now the question posed is can she make it three Guatemalans in a row? At the semi-final stage she opposes Mabelyn Enriquez, the top seed. In the quarter-finals she accounted for Marbella Aceves, the no.6 seed and like Clio Barcenos from Mexico (11-6, 6-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 4-11, 11-9).

Clio Barcenos in form, in the opposite half of the draw that scenario applied to Yadira Silva as well as to colleague Monica Muñoz. At the quarter-final stage both halted Guatemalan progress. Yadira Silva, the no.2 seed, accounted for Mercedes Mendizabal (11-9, 11-2, 11-3, 11-5); Monica Muñoz, the no.5 seed, caused a mild surprise, she overcame Lucia Cordero, the no.4 seed (7-11, 11-8, 7-11, 12-10,11-9, 7-11, 11-8).

Good form from Mexican players; it was the same in the men’s singles event. Marcos Madrid, the top seed, overcame Guatemala’s Heber Moscoso, the no.9 seed (11-8, 11-6, 11-3, 11-5) to reserve his place in the men’s singles semi-finals. He now meets colleague, Miguel Lara, the no.6 seed and quarter-final winner in opposition to El Salvador’s Diego Orantes (9-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-7).

Notable Mexican success in the top half of the draw; it was same in the lower half; Ricardo Villa, the no.2 seed, accounted for Costa Rica’s Daniel Araya, the no.14 seed (11-6, 11-7, 11-9, 11-3) and now faces Guatemala’s Kevin Montufar in the penultimate round. In a closely contested quarter-final duel, he ended the progress of Nicaragua’s Gary Castro (8-11, 11-6, 11-4, 8-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-5).

Meanwhile, in the men’s team event, represented by Marcos Madrid, Miguel Lara and Ricardo Villa; Mexico completed their first phase group fixture unbeaten, as did the Guatemalan outfit comprising Heber Moscoso, Hector Gatica and Kevin Montufar.

Similarly, in a group organized women’s team competition, Mexico with Clio Barcenas, Monica Muñoz and Yadira Silva in action, ended the day unbeaten, a situation that applied also to Guatemala’s Lucia Cordero, Mabelyn Enriquez and Hidalynn Zapata.

Play in Guatemala city concludes on Saturday 6th April.
