Lining up alongside Christian Malave and Jadriel Villanueva, in the final against the Dominican Republic, Gabriel Perez emerged the pivotal figure as a 3-1 success was recorded in opposition to the trio formed by Mariano Lockward, Hiram Morillo and Abit Tejada.
Impressively, he accounted for both Abit Tejada (11-7, 11-2, 12-10) and Mariano Lockward (12-10, 8-11, 11-7, 11-8), after sandwiched in between, crucially in the third match of the fixture, Jadriel Villanueva had overcame Hiram Morillo (12-10, 6-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-8).
Earlier, at the semi-final stage, with José Navedo preferred to Christian Malave, a 3-0 win had been recorded against the Barbados trio comprising Ramon Maxwell, Tre Riley and Marcus Smith. Similarly, in the opposite half of the draw, with Pedro Cabrera on duty as opposed to Hiram Morillo, success by the same margin had been recorded by the Dominican Republic in opposition to Trinidad and Tobago’s Derron Douglas, Abraham Francis and N’kosi Rouse.
Gold in the junior boys’ team event for Puerto Rico was slightly against the odds, they were the second seeds, as opposed to the Dominican Republic who occupied the top seeded spot. Rather differently, the wins enjoyed by Puerto Rico in both the cadet boys’ team and cadet girls’ team events were as their status at the head of the order advised.
In a group organized events, selecting from Pablo Figueroa, Sebastian Gallo, Jan Gonzalez and Derek Valentin, first place was secured in the cadet boys’ team competition ahead of St Lucia’s De Andre Calderon, Jelanie Du Sauzay and Ishmail Moise. Meanwhile, in the cadet girls’ team competition, the squad comprising Kristal Melendez, Alondra Rodriguez, Zolnamy Soto and Yoarilis Fugueroa claimed top spot. Jamaica’s Kelsey Davidson, Tsenaye Lewis and Solesha Young finished next in line.
A hat-trick of wins, the one title to elude Puerto Rico was in the junior girls’ team event. The trio comprising Daymar Castro, Edmarie Leon and Gabriella Vazquez, the top seeds, ended the day in second behind the second seeded Dominican Republic outfit formed by Esmerlyn Castro, Dahyana Rojas and Rosa Torres.
Team events complete, attention now turns to the individual events, play concludes in Santo Domingo on Wednesday 17th April.
