Currently listed at no.10 on the world rankings and thus not holding one of the seeded places, he accounted for Hungary’s Endre Major, the no.2 seed (11-5, 14-12, 11-8) to secure first place in the group. The consolation for Endre Major was that it was his only defeat; thus he finished in second position and thus reserved a main draw place.
Defeat for Endre Major not for the remaining leading names on duty in men’s singles class 1; Korea Republic’s Joo Youndae and Nam Kiwon duly secured first places in their respective groups as did Great Britain’s Rob Davies.
Likewise in the men’s singles wheelchair events, in both class 2 and in class 3, the most prominent names ended the day in first places in their respective groups. In class 2, Frenchman Fabien Lamirault reserved top spot, as did Poland’s Rafal Czuper, Ukraine’s Oleksandr Yezyk and Slovakia’s Jan Riapos. Similarly, in class 3, it was a day without great alarm for Germany’s Thomas Schmidbeger, China’s Feng Peifeng, Frenchman Florian Merrien and China’s Zhai Xiang.
The top four names unbeaten; it was no different in class 5; China’s Cao Ningning, Norway’s Tommy Urhaug and Turkey’s Ali Ozturk claimed first positions without experiencing defeats, a situation that applied also to Germany’s Valentin Baus.
However, in class 5, the outcome was somewhat different. Turkey’s Abdullah Ozturk, the no.2 seed, secured first position in his group, as did Maxime Thomas of France, the no.4 seed but for Korea Republic’s Kim Younggun, the top seed and for Turkey’s Nesim Turan, the no.3 seed, runners up spot was the end result.
Kim Younggun finished next in line to China’s Shi Yanping, Nesim Turan one place behind Croatia’s Tomislav Spalj.
Play in the men’s singles wheelchair classes concludes on Thursday 9th May.
