In a competition based on the same formula as that which will be used at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games; doubles to start followed by four singles with no player competing in more than two contests, their schedule started against the no.3 seeds.
The Dominican Republic trio formed by Eva Brito, Esmerlyn Castro and Yasiris Ortis was first on the agenda. A 3-1 win was recorded by the Cubans.
Mainstay of the victory was Idalys Lovet. She secured the doubles in partnership with Lizdainet Rodriguez in opposition to Esmerlyn Castro and Yasiris Ortiz (11-6, 11-8, 11-4), before in the fourth match of the fixture, closing the curtain by beating Eva Brito (11-5, 11-13, 4-11, 11-5, 11-5).
Impressively, the one further win for the Cubans was recorded by Daniela Fonseca Carranzana in opposition to Eva Brito in the second match of the engagement (7-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-4); for the Dominican Republic, Esmerlyn Castro recorded the one success; in the third contest she accounted for Lizdainet Rodriguez (12-10, 8-11, 9-11, 11-6, 12-10).
Success in their opening clash, there was also success in their one remaining fixture of the day, the Cuban outfit with Daniela Fonseca Carranzana replacing Idalys Lovet in the line-up recorded a 3-0 win against Ecuador’s Nathaly Paredes, Mylena Plaza and Astrid Salazar. Earlier in the day by the same margin, the Dominican Republic, fielding the same three players as against Cuba, had accounted for the Ecuadorians.
Cuba and the Dominican Republic thus advanced to the main draw.
Surprise final positions; in the remaining groups, Chile, the top seeds with Judith Morales, Daniela Ortega and Paulina Vega on duty finished ahead of Paraguay, the no.9 seed represented by Lucero Ovelar, Leyla Gomez and Melina Hermosila.
Similarly, it was first place for the no.2 seeds, Colombia’s Paula Medina, Maria Perdomo and Cory Tellez; runners up spot finished in the hands of Guatemala, the no.4 seeds who selected from Mabelyn Enriquez, Lucia Cordero, Hidalynn Zapata and Andrea Montufar.
Play in the women’s team event continues on Tuesday 28th May, the final will be played n Sunday 29th May.
