Penultimate round places at stake in men’s team class 8 on the afternoon of Tuesday 31st August at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games; the duo to attract the attention was the French pairing of Clément Berthier and Thomas Bouvier.

They performed a most spirited comeback to beat the Swedish combination formed by Emil Andersson and Linus Karlsson.

The Swedes secured the doubles (12-10, 11-13, 12-10, 14-12), before Thomas Bouvais started the recovery.

He beat Linus Karlsson in five games (11-8, 7-11, 4-11, 11-9, 11-8); the scene set, Clément Berthier duly obliged to complete the comeback. He overcame Emil Andersson (11-9, 11-5, 2-11, 11-8).

Progress for France, likewise there was progress for Great Britain and for China.

On duty for Great Britain, Aaron McKibbin and Billy Shilton recorded a 2-0 win against Hungary’s Andras Csonka and Gyula Zborai; the same margin of victory being recorded by China’s Peng Weinan and Zhao Shuai in opposition to Thailand’s Phisit Wangphonphathanasiri and Komrit Charitsat.

France now faces the Ukraine duo comprising Viktor Didukh and Maksym Nikolenko, the top seeds, they received a direct entry to the semi-finals; Great Britain opposes China.

A notably recovery by France, in women’s team class 1-3, it was the same for Italy’s Michela Brunelli and Giada Rossi.

Facing Thailand’s Chilchitparyak Bootwansirina and Darat Asayut, they lost the doubles (11-9, 11-7, 11-8), before Michela Brunelli beat Chilchitparyak Bootwansirina (11-3, 11-6, 11-4) and Giada Rossi accounted for Dararat Asayat (11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-3).

The full three matches needed by France to beat Thailand; it was the same for Korea Republic in opposition to Brazil. Lee Migyu and Yoon Jiyu combined to secure the doubles against Catia Oliveira and Marliane Santos (11-6, 7-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8), before Catia Oliveira overcame Seo Su Yeon to level matters (11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8)..

Yoon Jiyu returned to the table, she overcame Marliane Santos (13-11, 11-5, 11-1) to end matters.

Meanwhile, in the remaining quarter-final contests, Croatia’s Helen Dretar Karic and Andela Muzinic recorded a 2-0 win against Turkey’s Hatice Duman and  Nergiz Altintas; by the same margin China’s Xue Juan and Li Qian overcame Argentina’s Maria Garrone and Veronika Blanco.

In the penultimate round, China plays Italy, Croatia faces Korea Republic.

All semi-final fixtures will be played on Wednesday 1st September.
