Notable names added to gold medal haul on concluding day of upsets.

The curtain closed in Podgorica at the ITTF Montenegrin Para Championships 2022 on Saturday 4th June, Poland’s Rafal Czuper and Rafal Lis, alongside Serbia’s Borislava Peric-Rankovic and Norway’s Aida Dahlen, emerged the most successful.

Each departed with two gold medals to their credit, Aida Dahlen within a whisker of three.

Having enjoyed success in men’s singles class 2, Rafal Czuper partnered colleague Tomasz Jakimczuk to gold in men’s doubles class 4.

Similarly, Rafal Lis, the men’s singles class 4 winner, continued his good form. He joined forces with teammate, Krszysztof Zylka, to secure the top prize in men’s doubles class 18. The previous day Rafal Lis had beaten Krszysztof Zylka by the narrowest in the penultimate round (7-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-6, 12-10).

Both Polish pairs prevailed as predicted; they commenced proceedings the top seeds.

Conversely, in the women’s doubles it was second place for the favourites, as Borislava Peric-Rankovic, the class 4-5 winner one day earlier and Aida Dahlen, successful in class 7-9, added to the title tally.

In group organised events, in class 10, Borislava Peric-Rankovic and compatriot Nada Matic finished ahead of the Germany’s Sandra Mikolaschek and Croatia’s Andela Muzinic; in class 20 for the Norwegian pairing of Aida Dahlen and Nora Korneliussen it was pole position with Germany’s Stephanie Grebe and Juliane Wolf next in line.

Two titles for Aida Dahlen but the full house proved elusive.

Partnering compatriot Pablo Jacobsen, they had to settle for runners up spot in mixed doubles class 20; the event won by Croatia’s Pavao Jozic and Mirjana Lucic, the top seeds.

Gold for Croatia, it was the same in mixed doubles class 10, Tomislav Spalj and Andela Muzinic emerged victorious.

Likewise, there was the top prize for Germany. Juliane Wolf joined forces with colleague, Thomas Rau to secure the mixed doubles class 14 title; Thomas Rau partnered Romania’s Bobi Simion to the top prize in men’s doubles class 14.

Meanwhile, in the one remaining event on the last day of play, there was the top step of the podium for Austria. Krisztian Gardos and Christian Schieber emerged the men’s doubles class 18 winners.

Attention now turns to Mexico, the ITTF Copa Cristina Hoffmann 2022 commences in Cancun on Monday 6th June.
