At the Olympic Games, in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 Yu Mengyu reached the women’s singles quarter-final before being a member of the trio that experienced defeat against Japan in the women’s team bronze medal contest.

Later in Tokyo, it was the opposite scenario; a bronze medal women’s singles defeat followed by a last eight women’s team conclusion.

On both occasions she excelled, one both occasions when played concluded, the podium place proved elusive.
