Excitement is building as the ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals Busan 2024 Presented by BNK Busan Bank is just days away. The stage is set for a thrilling spectacle. From February 16 to 25, 2024, Busan will witness a gathering of top-tier talent and fierce competition. This landmark event marks Korea Republic’s inaugural hosting of the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals.
Stakes are now even higher than the ITTF Executive Board, on a proposition of the ITTF World Ranking Working Group, approving the awarding of individual ranking points.
The introduction of individual ranking points is part of a broader strategic initiative designed to provide players and teams with a more comprehensive evaluation of their achievements. This initiative seeks to acknowledge individual performances within the framework of team competitions, ultimately elevating the prestige of team events.
Ranking points will be distributed among players based on their team’s final position in the event. The winning team will secure a total of 1,000 World Ranking points, while the second-ranked team will earn 700 points. Teams reaching semifinals will receive 350 points, then 175 points for quarterfinals, 90 for Round of 16. Teams ranked fourth and fifth of their group will get 45 and 20 points respectively. These points will then be shared among team members, considering their individual contributions, such as the share of singles matches won throughout the entire event.
For instance, if the champion team wins a total of 24 singles matches during the competition and is awarded 1,000 points, a player winning 6 matches (25%) during the event will earn 250 World Ranking Singles points.
Rankings points will be awarded at all the stages of the ITTF World Championships, including the continental and regional stages. Teams will also continue to receive points counting towards the ITTF World Team Ranking.
