Wu, making history as Fiji’s first Olympic table tennis player, gave his all but was no match for Pitchford’s speed and power. Japan’s Miu Hirano also enjoyed a successful start to her campaign, securing a 4-0 victory over Italy’s Giorgia Piccolin to claim her first Olympic singles win.

Shin Yubin has made a strong start to her Singles campaign, defeating Australia’s Melissa Tapper 4-0. The fourth seed showcased her talent, securing a comfortable victory. The young Korean star will now face Georgina Pota in the Round of 32.

Tapper, who is also set to compete at the Paris Paralympic Games, was gracious in defeat. “I enjoyed getting out there and playing against such a quality athlete like Shin,” she said. “She’s No.8 in the world, I’m No.250. In the end, I surprised myself that I was able to be semi-competitive with her during the points.” The Australian can be proud of her performance against one of the world’s best players.

Wong Chun Ting has advanced to the Round of 32 after a thrilling seven-game encounter with Senegal’s Ibrahima Diaz.
