Day five of the table tennis competition concludes with the completion of the Round of 16. 

Fan Zhendong secured his place in the quarter-finals with a 4-0 victory over Kanak Jha, while Hina Hayata advanced after a 4-0 win against Yuan Jia Nan. The stage is now set for the highly anticipated quarter-finals.

Moregard Stuns Again

Truls Moregard extended his dream run at the Paris Olympics, securing a place in the quarter-finals with a hard-fought 4-1 victory over Kao Cheng-Jui. The Swedish sensation, who earlier stunned World No. 1 Wang Chuqin, continues to defy expectations.


Shin Yubin Dominates Zhang

Shin Yubin advanced to the quarter-finals with a convincing 4-0 victory over Lily Zhang. The South Korean displayed impressive form, overpowering her opponent to secure her place in the next round.

Session 2 Concludes: Hirano Halts Batra’s Run

Miu Hirano brought Manika Batra’s historic run in Paris to a close with a convincing 4-1 (11-6, 11-9, 12-14, 11-8, 11-6) victory. While Batra fought valiantly, Hirano’s experience and skill proved too much to overcome.


Chen Meng Triumphs Over Supermom Eerland

Defending champion Chen Meng continued her quest for gold with a hard-fought 4-1 (8-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-4, 11-8) victory over ‘Supermom’ Britt Eerland. Despite a strong start from the Dutch, Chen regained control and dominated the remainder of the match to seal her spot in the last 8.


Hugo Breaks French Hearts

Table 2 was buzzing with anticipation as Hugo Calderano aimed to extinguish French hopes. After a shaky start, Calderano adapted to the atmosphere, showcasing impressive footwork that put him in control against Alexis Lebrun. The Brazilian proved too strong for Alexis and spoiled the French party with a 4-1 win to book his spot in the quarter-finals for the second consecutive Olympics.

Similarly, across the court, it was heartbreak for Adriana Diaz after PRK’s Pyon Song Gyong overturned a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Puerto Rican, securing her place in the next round.


Felix Triumphs Ovtcharov in Epic Encounter

Felix Lebrun has pulled off a major win, defeating Olympic legend Dimitrij Ovtcharov in a thrilling seven-game encounter. The French star battled to secure a 4-3 (11-9, 15-13, 12-10, 8-11, 3-11, 8-11, 11-7) victory. Felix Lebrun’s exceptional performance sees him advance to the quarter-finals.

“The pressure was high today, and he fought back to even it at 3-3. But I think I managed it well and handled the key points. I think I managed my stress well. It was good that I started the match very well, and I handled the key points well. I’m super happy about that. I started some games not so good. Ovtcharov is a very tough and experienced player and he never gives up. It was very difficult to beat him today. I knew even at 3-0 it would be hard for me. But at 3-3 the beginning of my game was very good, with the crowd too, and I tried to push myself with the crowd.” Felix Lebrun

The Round of 32 has concluded, with several thrilling matches determining the final 16 players in both the men’s and women’s singles events. The stage is now set for the knockout rounds as players battle for a place on the podium. The round of 16 action resumes from 15:00 (GMT+2).


Kanak Jha Continues American Dream Run, Yuan Jia Nan Advances

Kanak Jha has extended his historic Olympic campaign, defeating Panagiotis Gionis to secure his place in the Round of 16. The American star’s impressive run continues, setting up a thrilling clash against Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Fan Zhendong.

Meanwhile, home favourite Yuan Jia Nan has progressed to the next round, overcoming a stiff challenge from Mo Zhang. The French player will now face Hina Hayata in a highly anticipated match.


India’s Sreeja Akula has made it to the Round of 16 on her birthday. The 26-year-old star defeated Singapore’s Zeng Jian in a hard-fought 4-2 match (9-11, 12-10, 11-4, 11-5, 10-12, 12-10) to secure her place in the next round. Akula’s victory marks a significant milestone for Indian table tennis, with Manika Batra making headlines for being the first Indian to make it to the last 16, with now Sreeja joining her. Sreeja will now face a stern test against world number one Sun Yingsha.

“I think India is doing well for the past so many years. We’re getting very good support from the federation, from the government. We’re all doing really well, and I hope it continues in the future.”

Anders Lind has secured his place in the Round of 16 after a thrilling seven-game encounter against Poland’s Milosz Redzimski. The Dane displayed incredible resilience, coming from behind to win 12-10, 6-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6. Sun Yingsha Advances, 61-Year-Old Ni Xia Lian Bows Out

World number one Sun Yingsha has progressed to the Round of 16 after a dominant 4-0 victory over Luxembourg’s 61-year-old Ni Xia Lian. The veteran player, competing in her sixth Olympic Games, bowed out gracefully, earning the admiration of fans for her sportsmanship and determination. Despite the defeat, Ni Xia Lian’s participation has captured the hearts of many, inspiring athletes and fans alike.


Dark0 Jorgic and Shin Yubin Advance to Round of 16

Slovenia’s Darko Jorgic has secured his place in the Round of 16 with a victory over Team GB’s Liam Pitchford. Jorgic will now face a tough test against TPE’s Lin Yun-Ju.

In other action, Korea Republic’s Shin Yubin advanced to the Round of 16 with a 4-1 win over Hungary’s Georgina Pota. She will face USA’s Lily Zhang in the next round.


Stunning Upset: Moregard Stuns World Number One

In a major upset that has sent shockwaves through the tournament, Sweden’s Truls Moregard has defeated World Number One Wang Chuqin. Moregard produced a sensational performance to overcome the new Mixed Doubles champion, winning 12-10, 11-7, 5-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-6. The Swede will now face Kao Cheng-Jui in the last 16.

Speaking after his defeat, Wang Chuqin said, ““My opponent had some changes in his serves and I didn’t respond to them well enough. I definitely felt very down coming off the court. I had such a high yesterday from winning the mixed doubles gold. To go from that to this low, I guess this is what competitive sport is about. It’s all on me, I didn’t have the ability to win today. I wasn’t enough, I’ve got to go back to reflect.”


Miu Hirano Advances to Round of 16

Japan’s Miu Hirano has secured her place in the Round of 16 with a dominant 4-0 victory over Hong Kong, China’s Zhu Chengzhu. Hirano’s impressive performance sets up a highly anticipated clash with India’s Manika Batra.
