The ITTF World Youth Championships 2024 burst into life on 22 November, marking the beginning of what promises to be eight days of scintillating table tennis action. The Swedish Table Tennis Association has transformed the Helsingborg Arena into a world-class venue, with their meticulous organisation setting the perfect stage for the world’s emerging talents.
Whilst snow fell gently outside the Helsingborg Arena, the action inside was nothing short of scorching, with dramatic matches unfolding across all tables. The team events took centre stage, delivering moments that will be remembered long after the championships conclude.

One of the day’s most captivating encounters came in the Under-15 girls’ Round of 16, where Uzbekistan and USA engaged in a nail-biting battle. Uzbekistan’s Arujan Kamalova set the tone with a commanding 3-0 victory over Mandy Yu. Though the USA fought back through Irene Yeoh and Abigail Yu to claim a 2-1 lead against Asel Erkebaeva and Adelina Khasanova, the Uzbek team showed remarkable resilience. Kamalova returned to level the contest with a thrilling win over Yeoh, before Erkebaeva sealed their progress with a decisive 3-0 triumph against Yu, sparking jubilant celebrations. Whilst their journey was later halted by Germany, their opening performance was nothing short of inspirational.
The host nation Sweden, despite not being tournament favourites, captured hearts in the Under-19 boys’ event with a spirited display that pushed Australia to their limits. The Australian duo of Nicholas Lum and Aditya Sareen ultimately proved too strong, but the Swedish team’s performance drew passionate support from the home crowd.
The day’s biggest talking points centred around two stunning upsets that sent shockwaves through the tournament. Korea Republic, one of the pre-tournament favourites, suffered unexpected defeats in both their Under-15 boys’ and girls’ teams. The girls’ team fell to a tactically astute Hong Kong, China side, but the most dramatic moment was saved for the day’s final match.

In what will surely be remembered as one of the championships’ most remarkable comebacks, Poland’s Under-15 boys turned around a 2-0 deficit against Korea Republic in their quarter-final clash. After Lee Seungsoo and Ma Yeongmin had given Korea Republic what seemed an unassailable lead, Aleks Pakula sparked the Polish revival with a commanding win over Kim Seongwon. The momentum shifted dramatically when Patryk Zyworonek fought back from behind to overcome Lee Seungsoo, before Samuel Michna completed the extraordinary comeback with a convincing 3-0 victory, sending the Polish team into rapturous celebrations as they secured their semi-final berth.
