Tunisia hosted an ITTF Level 3 Coaching Course last month to mark a significant milestone in Africa's coach education. Organized as part of the 2025 ITTF Africa Development Program, it was the first time in eight years that this high-level course had been conducted in Africa, making its return a highly anticipated event.

17 participants from nine different Member Associations took part in the intensive eight-day course designed to elevate their coaching expertise to the highest international standards. The course concluded with ten participants successfully passing the exam, further strengthening the coaching landscape in African table tennis.

The course was led by Ramzi Mabrouk, ITTF Development Programs Manager, and featured a blend of theoretical and practical sessions. Over eight days, participants engaged in various educational modules aimed at refining their coaching techniques, deepening their tactical knowledge, and enhancing their ability to train high performance athletes.

Adding an invaluable high performance element to the course, renowned coaching expert Joze Urh provided insights from a practical coaching perspective from 16-18 February. His sessions emphasized required qualities, strategies, planning, and game styles, equipping the coaches with the tools to elevate their training programs.

“A group of always smiling and very curious coaches who put me in a position where I had to do my best to answer all their questions and at the same time, I felt immense satisfaction. I wish them much success in passing on their knowledge to future generations.” – Joze Urh, Expert

The final day of the course was particularly demanding, as participants were required to showcase their understanding through a practical presentation and exam, followed by a theoretical assessment.

“The ITTF Level 3 coaching course has equipped me with advanced coaching skills, knowledge, techniques, and credentials needed to make a meaningful impact on the sport. Looking forward to sharing what I learnt with other local coaches and players back home.” – Boitshwarelo Butale (BOT), participant

In addition to the busy coursework, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) arranged a cultural excursion to the seaside town of Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia. Participants had the opportunity to experience the local culture, savor traditional Tunisian tea, and relax by the stunning Mediterranean coastline. This cultural exchange fostered camaraderie among the coaches and provided a refreshing break from their intensive training schedule.

“I’m very excited with this incredible and, of course, truly rewarding opportunity to learn and grow alongside passionate managers/coaches.” – Yves Ndizeye (RWA), participant

The successful execution of the ITTF Level 3 Coaching Course in Africa represents a significant step forward in the development of table tennis across the continent. With this course, ITTF is helping to ensure that Member Associations and sports clubs benefit from well-trained professionals capable of instructing and supporting the next generation of elite athletes. This initiative reinforces ITTF’s commitment to advancing the sport through education and professional development. The participating coaches are now better equipped to contribute to the growth of table tennis within their respective countries, ultimately raising the level of competition and fostering a stronger table tennis community in Africa.
