Day 6 comes to a close with tournament favourite Shidong Lin of China beating compatriot Jingkun Liang 4-1 (13-15, 11-4, 11-5, 11-8, 11-7).
After dropping a tightly contested first game, Lin rebounded impressively, rampaging through the next four games to defeat his senior teammate Liang. This victory marks their fourth encounter this year, with Lin now leading the head-to-head record 3-1 for 2025.
The first game saw Lin and Liang closely matched, with Liang visibly motivated to seek redemption after his recent loss to Lin at the WTT Champions Chongqing. However, Lin shifted gears from the second game onward, displaying a dominant performance that left Liang struggling to keep up. Lin’s commanding play ensured a decisive victory as he thoroughly outclassed his senior teammate in the remainder of the match.
Lin experienced some difficulties with the angle of his toss during serves, leading to multiple foul calls that were upheld by TTR. This recurring issue has troubled him not only in this tournament but throughout his career, highlighting an area he must refine, as he faces a marauding Hugo Calderano in tomorrow’s eagerly awaited final.
Defending champion Yingsha Sun of China made light work of compatriot Xingtong Chen, winning 4-1 (11-7, 11-8, 11-2, 10-12, 11-4).
Sun and Chen’s deep understanding of each other’s game tactics was apparent, leading to numerous extended rallies. However, Sun asserted dominance early, consistently emerging on top in the exchanges. While Chen managed to claim a consolation fourth game, Sun swiftly regained control, clinching the fifth game in commanding fashion, much to the delight of her fans.
Sun will face compatriot Man Kuai in what promises to be an epic final.
UPSET ALERT!!
Hugo Calderano’s dream run continued as he achieved a monumental victory over Chuqin Wang , the World No. 2, to secure his place in the finals. This achievement represents a historic milestone for Brazil and Pan America at the World Cup, with Calderano securing a guaranteed silver medal. His incredible performance thus far marks an extraordinary campaign for both him and his region.
Trailing 1-3, Calderano staged a remarkable comeback, undeterred by the challenging circumstances, including a crowd heavily backing his opponent.
The match highlighted Calderano’s sheer determination and grit, culminating in an extraordinary final point where he combined acrobatics, a double-handed backhand, and a powerful forehand to win a seemingly impossible rally. The triumph sparked jubilant celebrations among the Brazilian contingent.
The final score line read (in favour of Calderano) read – 4-3 (14-12, 5-11, 6-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-5, 12-10).
Calderano now awaits the winner of Shidong Lin vs Jingkun Liang for an exciting final showdown.
Day 6 starts with an epic, as Man Kuai (China) beats Mima Ito (Japan) in an instant World Cup classic, winning in seven games.
Kuai, in a superlative performance, took down an experienced, coming back from 0-2 down to force her way back into the match.
Ito, leading 2-1, let slip of a 7-3 lead in the fourth game, foregoing an opportunity to go 3-1 up in the fixture. This ultimately proved too costly in the end, as she lost the match despite being the better player overall.
Kuai did well to withstand Ito’s barrage of flat hits from both flanks, finding ways to keep herself alive in points. Kuai showed incredible character as well, clawing back into games she had no business winning. This was Kuai’s second consecutive victory against Ito, having also beaten her at the 2025 ITTF-ATTU Asian Cup.
With this win, Man books a maiden final appearance at the World Cup, where she will await the winner of compatriots Yingsha Sun and Xingtong Chen.
